Fibreglass Insulation

Fibreglass Insulation

Fibreglass insulation is the most common form of insulation found in most North American homes.

As its namesake suggests, fibreglass batts are made of fine fibres of glass (as well as sand), and comes assembled in thick pads (usually 16” or 24”).

Where structural irregularities and obstructions exist (i.e. wall studs containing wires), loose-fill (blown-in) fiberglass provides more complete insulation than batts.

Properties of fibreglass insulation:

  • Made of 20% recycled content
  • Fibreglass insulation is fireproof
  • Fibreglass insulation contains sound-deadening properties
  • Fibreglass insulation is moisture-sensitive; it does not absorb nor hold water
  • Can be used in open areas, as well as unenclosed cavities
  • Rated at R3 to R4, depending on material used

If fibreglass insulation is improperly installed (i.e. compression and gaps present), the product’s effectiveness will be greatly reduced. Without proper protective equipment, fiberglass can irritate and harm your lungs, skin, and eyes.
